Scottie Scheffler Takes Two-Shot Lead into Final Round at The Players Championship
Scottie Scheffler demonstrated why he's the world's top-ranked golfer on Tuesday, carding a flawless 6-under 66 in challenging windy conditions to take a two-shot lead heading into the final round of The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.
Scheffler, who has already won twice on the PGA Tour this season, navigated the treacherous Stadium Course with precision and patience. His bogey-free round included six birdies, with his best stretch coming on the back nine where he birdied three of his final five holes to separate himself from the field.
"The wind was really swirling out there today," Scheffler said after signing his scorecard. "You had to really commit to your shots and trust your numbers. I felt like I stayed patient and took advantage when I had opportunities."
The 29-year-old Texan's stellar play on the notorious 17th hole, the island green par-3, proved pivotal to his round. With the pin positioned dangerously close to the water on the right side, Scheffler hit a precise 9-iron to 12 feet and calmly sank the birdie putt to the roar of the gallery.
Xander Schauffele sits in second place at 10-under after shooting a 69, while Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa are tied for third at 9-under. The leaderboard remains tightly packed with 15 players within five shots of the lead, setting up what promises to be a thrilling final round.
Scheffler has been in dominant form this season, winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational just two weeks ago and finishing in the top 10 in seven of his eight starts. A victory at The Players Championship would further cement his status as the player to beat heading into the Masters next month.
Weather conditions are expected to remain challenging for Wednesday's final round, with winds forecast to gust up to 25 mph. The $25 million purse and elevated status of The Players Championship as golf's unofficial fifth major adds extra pressure to what promises to be an exciting conclusion.
