Adzic strikes in stoppage time as Sassuolo beat Juventus 3-2

Vasilije Adzic scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time as Sassuolo beat Juventus 3-2 in Serie A on Sunday. The hosts prevailed despite two equalisers from Edon Zhegrova, with the winning goal arriving shortly after Juventus had appeared to rescue a point at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia.

The match remained goalless until Sebastiano Esposito put Sassuolo ahead in the 65th minute. Juventus responded through Zhegrova in the 82nd, setting up a finish in which neither side could protect its position for long. That first equaliser was followed by three more goals before the final whistle, turning a low-scoring contest into a five-goal game.

Kieron Bowie restored Sassuolo’s advantage in the 89th minute, but Zhegrova struck again in the first minute of added time. AS reported that the Juventus forward scored his second with a left-footed effort from outside the penalty area. His double brought the visitors back from behind on two separate occasions without ultimately earning them a share of the points.

Adzic then settled the contest on a Sassuolo counterattack. According to AS, Armand Laurienté supplied the pass that released him to finish right-footed towards the far post. The late sequence left Sassuolo with all three points: Bowie had made it 2-1, Zhegrova levelled at 2-2 and Adzic delivered the final change to the score.

The defeat ended Juventus’s unbeaten start to the league campaign. The club’s own pre-match statistics recorded seven points from their opening three fixtures, comprising victories over Frosinone and Parma followed by a home draw against Milan. Luciano Spalletti’s side had conceded only once across those games, but allowed three goals on their fourth league outing.

The match also marked the first Serie A coaching meeting between Spalletti and Alberto Aquilani, according to Juventus. Aquilani previously played under Spalletti at Roma and later spent the 2010-11 season with Juventus, making 33 league appearances. On this occasion, his Sassuolo team secured the result with the last of three leads.
