Adell and Ramírez keep Guardians alive with 9-3 win over White Sox
Cleveland kept its postseason alive with a 9-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday, October 7, avoiding a sweep in Game 3 of the American League Division Series. Jo Adell and José Ramírez supplied the decisive triples, according to Associated Press reporting, leaving Chicago with a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five matchup.
Watch the highlights:
Adell broke open the third inning with a two-out triple that cleared the bases and put the Guardians ahead 4-1. Ramírez added another two-out triple in the eighth, bringing home Travis Bazzana and Patrick Bailey to extend the advantage to 7-3. Cleveland became the first team in franchise history to hit two triples in a postseason game, AP reported.
MLB's official box score shows how widely the Guardians shared the offensive work. Adell, Ramírez, Bailey and Brayan Rocchio each finished with two hits, accounting for eight of Cleveland's 11. Adell drove in three runs and Ramírez two, while Ramírez also scored twice. The Guardians drew 10 walks and scored their nine runs without hitting a home run.
Cleveland's pitching staff combined for 19 strikeouts while allowing six hits and three walks. Foster Griffin provided seven of those strikeouts across two and two-thirds innings, conceding one run on two hits without issuing a walk. Daniel Espino recorded two strikeouts in his two-thirds of an inning, and Shawn Armstrong added one during a scoreless two-thirds of an inning.
Tim Herrin and Cade Smith supplied particularly effective relief, combining for three scoreless innings without allowing a hit or a walk. Herrin struck out three in his inning of work, while Smith struck out five across two innings. Together they accounted for eight strikeouts and nine outs, helping Cleveland protect the lead as its offense added late runs.
The result followed a difficult offensive start to the series: Cleveland had produced only three runs and seven hits across the first two games, AP reported. Game 4 is scheduled for Thursday in Chicago. The White Sox remain one victory from advancing, while the Guardians must win again to force a deciding fifth game.
