Scottie Scheffler Fires Course-Record 61 to Take Three-Shot Lead at The Players Championship
The defending Masters champion posts the lowest round in TPC Sawgrass history during the second round.

Scottie Scheffler etched his name into TPC Sawgrass history Wednesday afternoon, firing a course-record 61 during the second round of The Players Championship to take a commanding three-shot lead heading into the weekend. The world No. 1's spectacular round featured 10 birdies and just one bogey, surpassing the previous course record of 63 held by multiple players.

Scheffler's historic round began early on the front nine, where he made four consecutive birdies from holes 4 through 7. The momentum continued as he navigated the challenging back nine at the Stadium Course, including a remarkable approach shot to within three feet on the iconic 17th hole that drew thunderous applause from the packed grandstands surrounding the island green.

The 27-year-old Texan was particularly dominant with his iron play, hitting 16 of 18 greens in regulation while averaging just 11 feet from the pin on his approach shots. His putting was equally impressive, as he needed only 25 putts for the round and converted several crucial birdie opportunities from outside 15 feet.

"I felt like everything clicked today," Scheffler said during his post-round press conference. "My ball-striking was as good as it's been all year, and when you're hitting it close to the pins consistently, you give yourself a lot of opportunities. To do it on this golf course, which is one of the most challenging on tour, makes it even more special."

The record-breaking performance moves Scheffler to 13-under par for the tournament, three shots clear of defending champion Viktor Hovland and rising star Ludvig Aberg, who are tied for second at 10-under. Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm sit four shots back at 9-under, still very much in contention as the field prepares for moving day.

Scheffler's dominance this early in the 2026 season continues a trend that began with his breakout 2022 campaign. With two wins already this year, including a playoff victory at Riviera, the former University of Texas star appears poised to challenge for his second Players Championship title. Weather conditions are expected to remain favorable for the weekend rounds, setting up what promises to be an exciting finish to golf's unofficial fifth major.
