Adam Peaty Wins British 100m Breaststroke Title at 31, Eyes Fourth Olympic Games in Los Angeles
Three-time Olympic champion Adam Peaty took another decisive step toward a fourth Games appearance, winning the 100m breaststroke at the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships in London with a time that sent a clear message to his rivals.
The 31-year-old Briton touched the wall in 58.97 seconds, holding off a pair of hungry teenagers who pushed him every stroke of the way. Filip Nowacki finished second in 59.39, with Max Morgan claiming third in a huge personal best of 59.56. Both swimmers confirmed their places on the British team for the upcoming European Aquatics Championships in Paris.
Peaty’s winning margin over the field was comfortable, but what stood out was the company he keeps at the top of the world rankings. His time was the second fastest recorded globally this year, a signal that even at 31, he remains the dominant force in the 100m breaststroke.
“We’ve got some talented youngsters coming through the pool,” Peaty said after the race. “I’m not talking about this year, it’s about LA for me, and these boys are going to challenge me the whole way.” The words were not those of a man easing toward retirement but of a competitor who sees a fresh motivation on the horizon.
That motivation is the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where the 50m breaststroke will make its debut on the Olympic schedule. That addition gives Peaty a second individual gold to chase, pairing perfectly with the 100m titles he won in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2021. It is almost a year since he confirmed his intention to continue swimming through to LA, a decision made after his wedding and amid a recalibration of what drives him in the sport.
The Aquatics GB Championships continue this week with 36 medal events still to be decided. James Guy, Imogen Clark, and Eva Okaro were among Tuesday’s other winners, but none drew a response quite like watching Peaty race — a reminder that the sport’s greatest breaststroker is not done yet.
