Kyle Hutton denies charges as fatal collision trial is set for 2028
Former Rangers player Kyle Hutton has pleaded not guilty to charges arising from a fatal road collision in Rutherglen. His trial has been scheduled for 7 February 2028 at a High Court hearing in Glasgow.

Former Rangers footballer Kyle Hutton is due to stand trial on 7 February 2028 over a road collision in which Victoria Cairns suffered fatal injuries, BBC News reported. The 35-year-old denies the charges, and a not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf during a hearing at the High Court in Glasgow.

Watch the highlights:

Cairns, who was 40, was struck in Farmeloan Road in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, on 2 November 2024. She died in hospital four days later. The prosecution alleges that Hutton was unfit to drive because of alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision. Those allegations are among the matters he denies.

The case includes a charge of causing death by dangerous driving. Prosecutors allege that Hutton drove too fast for the conditions and failed to make the observations needed to see Cairns standing in the road. They say his vehicle struck her and caused her to fall, resulting in the injuries from which she later died.

An alternative allegation concerns causing the fatality through careless driving. Hutton also faces charges relating to an alleged failure to cooperate with breath and drug tests, and an alleged failure to provide two breath specimens intended to establish his ability to drive. BBC News reported the charges as part of its account of the hearing.

Graeme Brown KC, representing Hutton, entered the not-guilty plea. He told the court that jurors could be shown footage that might be upsetting as part of the evidence. Brown also said Hutton's wife was likely to appear as a witness for the defence, although that was not presented as a certainty.

Lord Scott fixed the February 2028 trial date, with proceedings expected to take about four days. Hutton remains on bail while awaiting trial. The hearing set the timetable for the case; the allegations against him remain contested.

Hutton played for Rangers between 2010 and 2015. His other clubs have included St Mirren, Dumbarton and Partick Thistle, according to the BBC report.
