Verstappen Dominates Australian Grand Prix Practice Sessions
Max Verstappen served notice of his championship intentions by dominating both Friday practice sessions at the Australian Grand Prix, setting the fastest times in FP1 and FP2 at Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne. The Red Bull Racing driver looked comfortable from the opening minutes, posting a best lap time that was over three-tenths faster than his nearest competitor as teams prepared for this weekend's third round of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Verstappen's pace was particularly impressive given the challenging nature of the Albert Park circuit, with its high-speed corners and unforgiving barriers demanding precision and confidence. The Dutch driver appeared to extract maximum performance from his RB20 machine, showcasing the aerodynamic efficiency and power unit advantages that have made Red Bull the benchmark in recent seasons.
"The car felt really good today," said Verstappen after the second practice session. "We've made some setup changes since Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, and the balance feels much better here in Melbourne. Of course, it's only Friday, but I'm happy with the direction we're going in."
Lewis Hamilton emerged as Verstappen's closest challenger, finishing second-fastest in FP2 with his Mercedes W15 showing improved pace compared to the season's opening rounds. The seven-time world champion appeared more comfortable with his car's handling characteristics and will be hoping to challenge for pole position in Saturday's qualifying session.
Charles Leclerc rounded out the top three in his Ferrari SF-26, with the Monégasque driver expressing optimism about his team's chances for the weekend. Ferrari has made significant strides with their car's reliability and pace, though they still appear to be playing catch-up to Red Bull's overall package.
The practice sessions also highlighted the competitive nature of the 2026 grid, with multiple teams showing flashes of pace. McLaren's Lando Norris and Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso both logged impressive lap times, suggesting that Saturday's qualifying battle could be closer than anticipated. Weather conditions are expected to remain stable for the weekend, setting up what promises to be an exciting race on Sunday as Verstappen seeks to extend his early championship lead.
