England Women's T20 World Cup Squad Update: Perrin Withdrawal Opens Door for 18-Year-Old Debut
England Women's T20 World Cup preparations have been disrupted as captain Amy Perrin withdraws from the squad due to injury, with an uncapped 18-year-old called up as her replacement ahead of the tournament.

England Women's cricket has been thrown into disruption ahead of this summer's T20 World Cup after captain Amy Perrin was forced to withdraw from the squad due to a persistent knee injury. The Surrey all-rounder, who has led the side in 34 consecutive matches, sustained the injury during training last week and medical staff have recommended a minimum six-week recovery period.

Watch the highlights:

National selector England cricket have acted quickly, announcing the inclusion of uncapped 18-year-old Hannah Riley as Perrin's replacement. Riley, who plays for Lancashire Thunder in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, has been in outstanding form this season, scoring 487 runs at an average of 54.11 with three centuries. The right-handed batsman also offers leg-spin bowling, providing additional versatility to England's middle order.

Head Coach John Bracey expressed confidence in the teenager's ability to handle the pressure of international cricket: “Hannah has been on our radar for some time. Her performances this season have been exceptional, and she has the temperament to succeed at this level. While it's unfortunate that Amy won't be available, this represents a fantastic opportunity for a young player to establish herself on the world stage.”

Perrin's absence creates a significant leadership void in the English camp. Vice-captain Nat Sciver will assume the captaincy duties, though Bracey confirmed the search for a permanent successor would continue during the tournament. Former captain Heather Knight, currently returning from her own injury layoff, has been discussed as a potential mentor figure within the squad structure.

The T20 World Cup begins in Dubai on September 20, with England drawn alongside Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand in Group A. The squad will depart for a training camp in Oman on August 1, where Riley is expected to undergo intensive integration with senior players. The teenager will wear the number 23 shirt previously assigned to Perrin.

England women's cricket CEO said: “We are deeply disappointed for Amy, whose leadership has been instrumental in our recent success. However, we have complete faith in our replacement process, and Hannah comes highly recommended by our development pathway coaches. This tournament will be a valuable learning experience for her career.”
