Stokes all-round display puts Durham in control at Derbyshire
Ben Stokes scored 53 and took 2-14 as Division Two leaders Durham reduced Derbyshire to 127-6 on day two at Derby. The hosts trail by 156 runs with four first-innings wickets remaining.

Ben Stokes made an impact with bat and ball as Durham took control of their County Championship Division Two match against Derbyshire on day two at the OurCoop County Ground. Stokes scored 53 in Durham’s first-innings total of 283 before claiming 2-14 as Derbyshire closed on 127-6, still 156 runs behind with four wickets remaining.

Watch the highlights:

According to the ECB Reporters’ Network match report published by BBC Sport, Derbyshire seamer Ben Aitchison took 5-70 after beginning the morning by trapping David Bedingham lbw. Durham captain Alex Lees made 63, although he was dropped on 58 by Brooke Guest at first slip, while Stokes survived an edge from his second delivery that fell short of the slips.

Stokes accelerated with a series of boundaries, reaching his half-century from 56 balls. His innings contained 11 fours and ended when Anuj Dal caught a leading edge from his own bowling, leaving Durham 182-5. Graham Clark then made 64, including two sixes, and shared a 78-run stand from 129 balls with Ollie Robinson.

The second new ball helped Derbyshire finish Durham’s innings quickly. Aitchison had Clark caught at second slip and then beat Robinson’s drive, before Brydon Carse and Matthew Potts departed cheaply. Durham lost their final five wickets for 23 runs. The report noted that Aitchison became the first Derbyshire bowler in 61 years to take a five-wicket innings haul in four successive first-class matches.

Derbyshire’s reply began cautiously against Potts and Carse before Stokes struck with his first ball, inducing Harry Came to edge a defensive shot to third slip. He later bowled Caleb Jewell for 28. Stokes left the field after feeling his lower left side at the start of his fifth over, but returned before the close; the report did not provide any further assessment.

Will Rhodes dismissed Wayne Madsen and Matthew Montgomery, who also scored 28, before Potts removed Martin Andersson for 21 and Guest for one late in the day. Potts and Rhodes each finished the day with two wickets, leaving Division Two leaders Durham in a strong position after both sides collected three points from the match so far.
