Viktor Hovland Surges into Contention with Second-Round 65 at The Players Championship
Viktor Hovland vaulted into contention at The Players Championship Thursday afternoon, firing a bogey-free 65 during the second round at TPC Sawgrass to position himself perfectly for a weekend charge at golf's fifth major. The 26-year-old Norwegian carded seven birdies in a flawless round that showcased the precise iron play and confident putting that has made him one of the PGA Tour's most consistent performers over the past three seasons.
Hovland's round was highlighted by a spectacular stretch from holes 11 through 16, where he recorded five birdies in six holes to separate himself from the middle of the pack. His approach shot on the par-3 17th hole was particularly impressive, as he landed a 7-iron to within four feet of the pin on the island green that has claimed so many victims throughout Players Championship history.
The former Oklahoma State star was especially sharp with his mid-irons throughout the round, hitting 16 of 18 greens in regulation while averaging just 15 feet from the pin on his approach shots. His putting was equally impressive, as Hovland needed only 25 putts for the round and converted several crucial birdie opportunities from outside 12 feet that kept his momentum building.
"I felt really comfortable out there today," Hovland said after signing his scorecard. "The wind was manageable, the greens were rolling perfectly, and I was able to control my distances really well with my irons. When you hit it close consistently like I did today, you give yourself a lot of opportunities. I'm excited about my position heading into the weekend."
The strong second round moved Hovland to 9-under par for the tournament, just three shots behind leaders Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa, who both sit at 12-under heading into Saturday's third round. Hovland's recent form suggests he could be poised for another breakthrough moment, having finished in the top 10 in four of his last six starts on tour.
Hovland's resurgence comes at a perfect time as he continues to establish himself as one of golf's elite players. The three-time PGA Tour winner has been working extensively with his swing coach on course management and mental approach, areas where he felt he could improve after struggling in some big moments during the 2025 season. Thursday's performance suggested that work is paying dividends as he seeks his first victory since the 2023 BMW Championship. With ideal scoring conditions expected to continue through the weekend at TPC Sawgrass, Hovland will look to maintain his aggressive approach while avoiding the course's notorious trouble spots that have derailed so many promising rounds over the years.
