Islam Makhachev Successfully Defends Lightweight Title Against Charles Oliveira at UFC 298
The Dagestani champion dominated the Brazilian challenger over five rounds, winning by unanimous decision in the main event at Honda Center in Anaheim.

Islam Makhachev cemented his status as the UFC lightweight division's premier fighter with a dominant unanimous decision victory over Charles Oliveira in the main event of UFC 298 at the Honda Center in Anaheim tonight. The Dagestani champion successfully defended his title for the third time, controlling the Brazilian challenger across all five rounds with superior grappling and strategic striking to win by scores of 50-44, 49-45, and 49-45.

Makhachev's gameplan was executed flawlessly from the opening bell, as he utilized his world-class wrestling to repeatedly take Oliveira down and control position on the ground. The 32-year-old champion landed 127 significant strikes compared to Oliveira's 78, while recording four takedowns and over 12 minutes of control time. Oliveira, known for his dangerous submission game and comeback ability, was unable to threaten from his back as Makhachev maintained dominant positions throughout the fight.

The most decisive moment came in the fourth round when Makhachev secured a bodylock takedown and nearly finished the fight with a rear-naked choke attempt. Oliveira showed incredible heart in surviving the submission attempt, but the Brazilian veteran appeared to fade physically in the championship rounds. "Charles is a legend and one of the toughest fighters I have ever faced," Makhachev said during his post-fight interview. "I knew I had to be perfect tonight, and my team prepared me for exactly this type of fight."

Oliveira, who was seeking to reclaim the lightweight title he lost to the champion in their first encounter in 2023, acknowledged Makhachev's superiority while remaining gracious in defeat. The 34-year-old former champion had hoped that improved takedown defense would be the key to victory, but Makhachev's relentless pressure and chain wrestling proved too much to overcome. "Islam is the best lightweight in the world right now," Oliveira admitted. "He was better than me tonight, but I will be back stronger."

With the victory, Makhachev extended his winning streak to 14 fights and moved closer to matching the legendary reign of his mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov. UFC President Dana White suggested that the champion's next defense would likely come against the winner of the upcoming bout between Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier, scheduled for UFC 302 in June. The champion expressed interest in potentially moving up to welterweight to challenge for a second title, following in the footsteps of fighters like Conor McGregor and Daniel Cormier.

The co-main event featured a spectacular knockout victory by rising middleweight contender Khamzat Chimaev, who stopped former title challenger Marvin Vettori with a devastating head kick in the second round. The Swedish-Chechen fighter's performance further solidified his status as a future title contender and provided additional excitement for an already memorable fight card that drew over 16,000 enthusiastic fans to the Honda Center.

As the lightweight division continues to evolve, Makhachev's dominant reign appears likely to continue for the foreseeable future. His combination of elite wrestling, improved striking, and championship-level conditioning makes him a difficult puzzle for any potential challenger to solve. With tonight's victory, the Dagestani champion has established himself as one of the UFC's premier pound-for-pound fighters and a worthy successor to his coach's legendary legacy.
