Scheffler Wins Players Championship in Playoff After Dramatic Final Round at TPC Sawgrass
Scottie Scheffler captured The Players Championship with a playoff victory over Viktor Hovland after both players shot final-round 67s at the iconic TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course.

Scottie Scheffler added The Players Championship to his impressive resume today, defeating Viktor Hovland on the first playoff hole after both players carded final-round 67s to finish regulation at 15-under par at TPC Sawgrass. The world No. 1's clutch birdie putt on the famous island green 17th hole in the playoff provided a fitting climax to one of the most exciting editions of golf's unofficial fifth major in recent memory.

Scheffler entered the final round trailing Hovland by two strokes but quickly made up ground with birdies on the second and fourth holes, showcasing the consistent iron play that has made him the game's most reliable performer over the past two seasons. The Texan's round was highlighted by a spectacular eagle at the par-5 11th hole, where his 6-iron approach shot from 183 yards landed just four feet from the cup and rolled in for a three that sent the gallery into raptures.

Hovland, seeking his first Players Championship title, played magnificent golf throughout the final round but couldn't quite match Scheffler's late surge. The Norwegian's round featured six birdies and just one bogey, with his putting stroke looking particularly sharp on TPC Sawgrass' notoriously difficult greens. His 25-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole to regain a share of the lead was arguably the shot of the day, curling perfectly around the ridge to find the center of the cup.

The playoff began on the par-4 18th hole, where both players found the fairway with solid drives before hitting their approach shots to within 15 feet of the pin. After both players missed their birdie attempts, the playoff moved to the iconic 17th hole, where Scheffler's experience in big moments proved decisive. His 8-iron to the island green landed softly just 12 feet from the cup, while Hovland's shot came up just short and rolled back toward the front of the green.

"To win The Players Championship is something I've dreamed about since I was a kid," Scheffler said while holding the crystal trophy. "This golf course demands every aspect of your game, and Viktor pushed me to play my absolute best today. That eagle on 11 was obviously huge, but the way I handled 17 in the playoff was probably the most important shot of my career so far. This place is so special."

The victory marks Scheffler's third PGA Tour win of the 2026 season and his 15th overall, further cementing his status as the game's dominant player. His $3.6 million winner's check also moves him to the top of this year's FedEx Cup standings with several months still remaining in the season. For Hovland, the runner-up finish represents his best result at TPC Sawgrass and continues his steady climb up the world rankings as one of golf's most promising young stars.
