Lakers Complete Blockbuster Trade for All-Star Forward
The Los Angeles Lakers pulled off one of the most significant trades of the 2025-26 NBA season, acquiring two-time All-Star forward Marcus Thompson from the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for a package centered around young guard Austin Reaves and two first-round picks.
The deal, announced just hours before tonight's game against the Denver Nuggets, sends shockwaves through the Western Conference playoff race. Thompson, averaging 22.4 points and 8.7 rebounds this season, immediately becomes the Lakers' second-leading scorer behind LeBron James and provides the frontcourt depth they've desperately needed.
"This is about winning now," Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka said during an impromptu press conference. "Marcus brings championship-level experience and fits perfectly with our timeline. LeBron and Anthony Davis are playing at an elite level, and we owe it to them to put the best possible team on the floor."
The trade comes at a crucial juncture for Los Angeles, who sit at 32-18 and currently occupy the fourth seed in the competitive Western Conference. Thompson's arrival addresses their most glaring weakness – consistent scoring and rebounding from the forward position. The 28-year-old has been one of Portland's few bright spots in what has been a disappointing season for the Trail Blazers.
For Portland, the deal represents a commitment to their rebuild around young talents like Anfernee Simons and Jusuf Nurkic. Reaves, 26, brings playmaking ability and three-point shooting, while the draft compensation gives them flexibility for future moves. The Trail Blazers also received veteran center Christian Wood to help with immediate depth.
"Austin is exactly the type of player we want to build around," Portland GM Joe Cronin explained. "He's young, talented, and fits our culture perfectly. The draft picks give us options as we continue developing our young core."
The Lakers' championship odds immediately improved following news of the trade, with several sportsbooks moving them from +800 to +650 to win the title. Thompson is expected to make his Lakers debut Thursday against the Phoenix Suns, pending completion of his physical examination.
