Rory McIlroy Shoots Course-Record 61 to Take Two-Shot Lead at The Players Championship
The Northern Irishman fired 11 birdies in a flawless second round at TPC Sawgrass to position himself for his first Players title.

Rory McIlroy produced one of the greatest rounds in Players Championship history Tuesday afternoon, firing a course-record 61 at TPC Sawgrass to surge into a two-shot lead heading into the weekend at golf's unofficial fifth major championship.

The four-time major champion was absolutely flawless throughout his second round, recording 11 birdies against zero bogeys on the notoriously difficult Stadium Course. McIlroy's round included a spectacular eagle on the par-5 11th hole, where he holed a 40-foot putt that sent the gallery into a frenzy.

"That's probably the best round I've ever played on this golf course," McIlroy said after signing his scorecard. "Everything just clicked today - my driving was dialed in, my iron play was precise, and the putter was absolutely rolling it beautifully. Days like this don't come around often, so you have to take advantage when they do."

The 34-year-old Northern Irishman started his round on the back nine and immediately got into a rhythm, birdieing four of his first six holes before making the turn at 4-under par. His front nine was even more impressive, with seven birdies including four consecutive on holes 4-7 that moved him into contention for shooting 59.

McIlroy's approach shot on the famous island green 17th hole was particularly memorable, as he hit a perfect 8-iron to within two feet of the pin before rolling in the birdie putt. The par-3 hole has been the source of countless disasters throughout Players Championship history, but McIlroy made it look routine.

The round moved McIlroy to 12-under par for the tournament, two shots ahead of defending champion Cameron Smith and three clear of world No. 1 Jon Rahm. With ideal weather conditions forecast for the weekend, McIlroy appears perfectly positioned to capture his first Players Championship title.

McIlroy has been knocking on the door at TPC Sawgrass for years, with several near-misses that have left him frustrated. However, his current form and confidence suggest this could finally be the year he conquers the Stadium Course and adds another prestigious title to his already impressive résumé.
