Djokovic Withdraws from Dubai Championships Due to Wrist Injury
24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic pulls out of Dubai Tennis Championships citing persistent wrist issues ahead of Indian Wells preparation.

Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from this weeks Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships due to a persistent wrist injury, tournament organizers announced Tuesday morning. The 24-time Grand Slam champions decision comes just days before the ATP 500 event was set to begin, leaving a significant void in the prestigious tournaments draw.

The 38-year-old Serbian star, currently ranked No. 1 in the world, has been dealing with the wrist issue since his fourth-round exit at the Australian Open last month. Despite initially hoping the injury would resolve with rest and treatment, medical assessments this week revealed that competing in Dubai could risk further damage and potentially jeopardize his preparation for the upcoming Indian Wells Masters.

In a statement released through his management team, Djokovic expressed his disappointment at missing the Dubai event. "I am deeply sorry to withdraw from Dubai, a tournament that has always been special to me," the statement read. "The medical team and I believe this is the prudent decision to ensure I can return to full competitive form as soon as possible."

Djokovics withdrawal represents a significant blow to the Dubai Championships, where he has enjoyed considerable success over his illustrious career. The former world No. 1 has won the tournament five times, most recently claiming the title in 2022 with a straight-sets victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.

Tournament director Salah Tahlak acknowledged the impact of Djokovics absence while expressing understanding for the decision. "While we are naturally disappointed that Novak cannot join us this year, we fully support his decision to prioritize his long-term health," Tahlak said. "The Dubai Tennis Championships will continue to deliver an exceptional tournament for players and fans alike."

The injury concern adds another layer of uncertainty to Djokovics season as he approaches what many consider the twilight of his career. Despite his advanced age by tennis standards, Djokovic has continued to compete at the highest level, reaching the Wimbledon final last year and maintaining his position among the sports elite players.

With Indian Wells scheduled to begin in early March, Djokovic and his team are working around the clock to ensure proper recovery and rehabilitation. The Serbian has historically performed well at the California Masters event, winning it five times throughout his career, making his potential participation crucial for both his ranking and confidence heading into the clay court season.
