Gervonta Davis Stops Ryan Garcia in Round 7 to Claim Undisputed Lightweight Championship
Gervonta "Tank" Davis cemented his legacy as the premier lightweight boxer in the world Tuesday night, stopping Ryan Garcia with a thunderous left hook in the seventh round to become the undisputed lightweight champion at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
The highly anticipated unification bout lived up to its billing through six competitive rounds before Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) found his signature shot. Garcia had been boxing brilliantly, using his speed and reach advantage to frustrate Davis, but one perfectly timed counter left hook changed everything in an instant.
"I told everyone I was going to get him out of there," Davis said in his post-fight interview. "He was boxing well, but I knew if I stayed patient, the knockout would come. This is what I've been working toward my whole career – being undisputed champion."
Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs) was ahead on all three scorecards at the time of the stoppage, landing crisp combinations and effectively using his jab to control distance. However, Davis's patient approach and devastating power ultimately proved to be the difference in a fight many considered too close to call heading into the later rounds.
The knockout came at 2:47 of the seventh round when Garcia stepped in with a right hand but left himself open for Davis's signature counter. The Baltimore native's left hook landed flush on Garcia's jaw, sending the California native crashing to the canvas where referee Tony Weeks immediately waved off the contest.
With the victory, Davis unified the WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO lightweight titles, becoming the first undisputed champion in the division since Roberto Duran in 1972. The achievement caps off a remarkable rise for the 29-year-old, who has now scored knockouts in his last eight fights.
Davis's explosive performance sets up potential mega-fights with other pound-for-pound stars, including a possible move up to junior welterweight to face undisputed champion Teofimo Lopez. The boxing world now recognizes Tank Davis as the undisputed king of the lightweight division.
