Celtic Title Hopes Suffer Major Setback with Shocking Defeat at Dundee United
The Hoops fell 2-0 at Tannadice to drop five points behind Hearts and two behind Rangers with seven matches remaining in the Scottish Premiership race.

Celtic endured a damaging blow to their Scottish Premiership title aspirations, falling 2-0 to Dundee United at Tannadice in a performance that left them five points adrift of leaders Hearts with just seven fixtures remaining after the international break.

The pressure was mounting on Martin ONeill side following weekend victories by both Hearts and Rangers, but Celtic meekly failed to rise to the occasion on a challenging Tannadice pitch that limited free-flowing football throughout the encounter.

Will Ferry broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when Luca Stephenson cross escaped a cluster of defenders in front of Celtic goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo. Ferry found himself unmarked 10 yards from goal and fired United into a deserved lead that stunned the visiting supporters.

Emmanuel Agyei doubled the advantage in the 63rd minute with a moment of brilliance from 20 yards out. After Ferry battled his way back into the Celtic penalty area, his cut-back found Max Watters whose shot was blocked, only for the ball to fall perfectly for Agyei to thread his effort through a forest of legs and into the net.

The defeat represents Celtic eighth league loss of the season, leaving them in third place and two points behind Old Firm rivals Rangers, who themselves trail Hearts by three points. The result also marked the first time Dundee United have beaten Celtic twice in succession at home in league competition since April 1991.

For United, the victory provides valuable breathing space in their quest for a top-half finish, moving them to within six points of sixth-place Falkirk with two fixtures remaining before the split. Their ability to frustrate Celtic on the heavily sanded pitch demonstrated tactical discipline that has characterized their improved form this season.

Celtic struggled to adapt to the difficult playing conditions, with the ball spending considerable time in the air rather than on the ground. Kieran Tierney came closest for the visitors in the first half, firing over the crossbar following a corner in the 13th minute, while Ferry had earlier forced a fine save from Sinisalo with a powerful drive.

ONeill attempted to change the games momentum with tactical substitutions, introducing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sebastian Tounekti for McGregor and Iheanacho. Despite taking more control of possession, Celtic could not find the breakthrough needed to salvage points from their challenging away assignment.

The closest they came to reducing the deficit occurred when Reo Hatate long-range effort was fumbled against the post by United goalkeeper Maynard-Brewer, who gratefully gathered the ball at the second attempt. However, that let-off proved insignificant as Celtic simply could not discover a way back into the contest.

Elsewhere in the Scottish Premiership, Hearts maintained their position at the summit with a narrow 1-0 victory over Dundee. Oisin McEntee crucial 77th-minute header from Marc Leonard free-kick proved decisive, though Hearts were reduced to ten men when Frankie Kent received his second yellow card in stoppage time.

Weve been tested of late, but despite all that were going to be top of the league in April, said Hearts manager Derek McInnes. Were huge underdogs, but for us still to be where we are, churning out victories, as we did again, theres a lot to be said for 1-0 victories.

Rangers strengthened their second-place position with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Aberdeen at Ibrox. Tochi Chukwuani opened the scoring before teenager Mikey Moore, on loan from Tottenham, doubled the advantage early in the second half. Despite Dennis Geiger response for Aberdeen, Nico Raskin and James Tavernier sealed a comprehensive victory that moved Rangers to within three points of Hearts.

The results leave the Scottish Premiership title race wide open heading into the final stretch, with Celtic now facing an uphill battle to overhaul both Hearts and Rangers in their pursuit of another championship.
