Lakers Complete Major Trade Deal Hours Before Deadline
Los Angeles Lakers secure veteran wing player in three-team trade that could reshape their playoff push.

The Los Angeles Lakers made a significant move just hours before the NBA trade deadline, acquiring veteran wing Cam Johnson from the Brooklyn Nets in a complex three-team deal that also involves the Portland Trail Blazers. The trade sends D'Angelo Russell, Christian Wood, and multiple future draft picks to Brooklyn and Portland in exchange for Johnson and salary cap relief.

Johnson, averaging 18.5 points and shooting 41% from three-point range this season, immediately addresses the Lakers' need for perimeter shooting and two-way versatility. The 6-foot-8 forward has been one of the most consistent shooters in the league over the past three seasons, making him an ideal complement to LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

"We're thrilled to add Cam to our championship pursuit," said Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka in a statement. "His shooting ability, size, and playoff experience make him exactly what we needed to take the next step. This move demonstrates our commitment to competing at the highest level."

The trade comes as the Lakers sit in sixth place in the Western Conference with a 32-25 record. With 25 games remaining in the regular season, the addition of Johnson could be the catalyst that propels them into serious championship contention alongside the defending champion Denver Nuggets and conference-leading Oklahoma City Thunder.

For the Nets, this trade represents a full commitment to their rebuilding process. Russell returns to Brooklyn where he spent two seasons earlier in his career, while the draft capital acquired gives them flexibility for future moves. Portland receives Wood as a potential stretch-four option alongside their young core.

Johnson is expected to make his Lakers debut on Monday against the Sacramento Kings, with head coach Darvin Ham already planning to integrate him into the starting lineup. The Lakers have 12 games remaining before the All-Star break, providing time for chemistry to develop before the playoff push begins in earnest.
