Australia Advances to Cricket World Cup Final with Convincing 89-Run Victory Over New Zealand in Semifinal
Australia booked their place in the Cricket World Cup final with a commanding 89-run victory over New Zealand in Friday semifinal at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, with Steve Smith delivering a masterful unbeaten 127 to guide the defending champions to a total that proved too much for their trans-Tasman rivals to chase down.
Smith was in sublime form throughout his 132-ball innings, striking 11 fours and 3 sixes while anchoring Australia batting display after they were sent in to bat by New Zealand captain Kane Williamson. The veteran right-hander formed crucial partnerships with Travis Head (64) and Glenn Maxwell (48 not out) to help Australia post an imposing 342-4 from their 50 overs.
I felt really good out there today and the wicket was playing beautifully for batting, Smith said during his player of the match interview. We knew if we could get a good total on the board, our bowling attack would be tough to chase against. The team has been building momentum throughout this tournament and we are excited to be back in another World Cup final.
New Zealand chase got off to a disastrous start when they lost both openers inside the first 10 overs, with Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc exploiting favorable bowling conditions to reduce the Kiwis to 34-2. Captain Kane Williamson fought valiantly with 78 from 94 balls, but he lacked sufficient support from the middle order as Australia maintained relentless pressure.
The turning point came when New Zealand were 142-3 in the 28th over and appeared to be building a platform for their chase. However, leg-spinner Adam Zampa struck twice in consecutive overs to remove the dangerous Daryl Mitchell and Tom Latham, effectively ending New Zealand hopes of reaching the target. Zampa finished with figures of 4-52 from his 10 overs.
Australia bowling coach Andrew McDonald praised his teams complete performance after the match, noting how the batsmen set up the victory before the bowlers executed their plans perfectly. Steve innings was world-class and gave us the platform we needed, McDonald said. Our bowlers then took wickets at crucial moments to never let New Zealand get ahead of the required rate.
The victory sends Australia through to their eighth Cricket World Cup final, where they will face either India or England in next Wednesday showpiece at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Australia will be seeking their sixth World Cup title and their second consecutive triumph after winning the tournament on home soil in 2023.
