Brewers crush Rays 10-1 to move one win from first World Series title
The Milwaukee Brewers moved within one victory of their first World Series championship by beating the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 on Monday at Tropicana Field. Yahoo Sports reported that Milwaukee's eight-run fifth inning powered a victory that put the Brewers 3-0 ahead in the series.
Watch the highlights:
A replay decision kept that decisive inning alive. According to Yahoo Sports, Christian Yelich was initially called out at second on William Contreras's grounder, but Milwaukee successfully challenged the ruling. With the bases loaded, Tampa Bay replaced Freddy Peralta with Cam Booser. The Brewers then delivered a succession of run-scoring hits, turning a two-run advantage into a commanding lead before the inning ended.
Robert Gasser supplied the pitching performance to match. Associated Press reported that the rookie left-hander allowed one hit across six innings and faced only 18 batters, with a caught stealing and double play helping erase baserunners. He conceded a leadoff single to Yandy Diaz in the first before retiring 14 consecutive hitters. The result extended Milwaukee's postseason winning streak to eight games, including four successive victories away from home.
The offensive success came with an unchanged starting lineup. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter JR Radcliffe, in a report carried by Yahoo Sports, noted that the Brewers selected the same nine starters for all three World Series games after using 146 different lineups during the regular season. Tampa Bay instead adjusted its batting order and personnel against the left-handed Gasser.
Monday's margin contrasted sharply with Milwaukee's previous victory. In its Game 2 report, AP described how the Brewers recovered from a four-run deficit to win 5-4 on Saturday. Sal Frelick tied that game with a sixth-inning homer before Cooper Pratt's seventh-inning single brought home the go-ahead run, giving Milwaukee a two-game cushion before the series moved to Florida.
Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET at Tropicana Field. Yahoo Sports reported that no team has overcome a 3-0 deficit in the World Series. Tampa Bay must now win four consecutive games to prevent Milwaukee from securing the title.
