Shavkat Rakhmonov Submits Gilbert Burns in Round 2 to Earn Title Shot
Shavkat Rakhmonov continued his meteoric rise through the welterweight division on Saturday night, submitting veteran Gilbert Burns with a rear naked choke at 3:42 of the second round at UFC 300 in Las Vegas to earn his first UFC title shot.
The undefeated Kazakhstani fighter showed his complete skill set against the former title challenger, surviving early pressure from Burns' aggressive grappling before turning the tables with superior positioning and finishing instincts. Rakhmonov's victory extended his perfect professional record to 18-0 and marked his sixth consecutive UFC win.
"I knew Gilbert would come hard early, but I stayed patient and waited for my opportunities," Rakhmonov said through a translator during his post-fight interview. "This win means everything to me and my team. I'm ready for the champion now - I don't care if it's Edwards or Muhammad, I will be prepared."
Burns started aggressively, taking Rakhmonov down early in the first round and controlling position for extended periods. However, the 29-year-old contender showed excellent defensive grappling and gradually began to impose his will as the fight progressed into the second frame.
The turning point came when Rakhmonov secured a takedown of his own and immediately transitioned to back control. Despite Burns' desperate attempts to escape, Rakhmonov patiently worked his way to the submission, eventually sinking in the choke that forced the Brazilian veteran to tap out.
UFC President Dana White confirmed after the event that Rakhmonov will face the winner of the upcoming Leon Edwards vs. Belal Muhammad title fight, likely scheduled for late 2026. The Kazakhstani's combination of striking power, grappling excellence, and finishing ability makes him a formidable challenger for whoever emerges as champion. His undefeated streak and dominant performances have established him as one of the sport's most promising young fighters.
