Matthew Brennan Wins Second Vuelta Stage in Roquetes Sprint

What happened: Matthew Brennan won stage five of the Vuelta a España in Roquetes, taking his second sprint victory of the race in his first Grand Tour appearance. The Guardian reported that the 21-year-old British rider completed a powerful Visma-Lease a Bike performance at the end of the 173.4km route from Falset.

Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte guided Brennan through the closing kilometres before he finished the job in the sprint. Jordi Meeus of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe placed second, while EF Education-EasyPost rider Vincenzo Albanese took third. Brennan has now won both of the race's sprint opportunities covered in the report.

The day's early move involved five riders. Fredrik Dversnes initially attacked alone before Walter Calzoni, Stefan Kung, Mattia Gaffuri and Diego Uriarte joined him at the front. Kung later returned to the peloton, and the remaining four escapees were caught with about 100km still to race.

Lidl-Trek helped increase the pace as crosswinds created concern about possible splits in the bunch. However, Mads Pedersen, one of the riders expected to contest the finish, was dropped on the category-three Puerto de Pauls climb. That development left Visma-Lease a Bike in control of the decisive final part of the stage.

Why it matters: Brennan's second win confirmed a perfect return from the two sprint chances described by The Guardian. After the finish, he credited the strength of his teammates and said the team's execution had been close to ideal, with Van Aert and Laporte providing the final lead-out. Van Aert, speaking to TNT Sports, said Brennan had been the team's strongest option from the group that reached the finish.

The result did not alter the top of the general classification. Tadej Pogacar of UAE-Team Emirates XRG finished safely and retained his commanding advantage of 3min 21sec. Stage five instead belonged to Brennan and Visma-Lease a Bike, whose work on the climb and in the run to Roquetes delivered another sprint success for their Grand Tour debutant.
