Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Signs Record-Breaking Extension with Toronto Blue Jays Worth $340 Million Over 10 Years
The All-Star first baseman agreed to the largest contract in Blue Jays franchise history, keeping him in Toronto through his prime years.

The Toronto Blue Jays made franchise history on Friday afternoon by signing superstar first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a massive 10-year, $340 million contract extension that represents the largest deal in team history and ensures the 27-year-old slugger will spend his prime years attempting to bring a World Series championship to Canada.

The deal, which includes a full no-trade clause and escalating salaries that peak at $40 million in the final years, was announced during a packed press conference at Rogers Centre that featured Guerrero Jr., Blue Jays ownership, and team executives celebrating what they called a cornerstone moment for the organization moving forward.

This is where I want to be, this is where I want to win a championship, Guerrero Jr. said while wearing his Blue Jays jersey at the podium. The fans here are incredible, the organization has shown they believe in me, and now we can focus completely on building a team that can compete for titles year after year. This is the best day of my baseball career so far.

Guerrero Jr. has been one of the most productive hitters in Major League Baseball since breaking into the league, posting a career .296 batting average with 162 home runs and 456 RBIs over his first six seasons. The son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero Sr. has made three All-Star teams and finished second in AL MVP voting in 2021 when he led the league with 48 home runs.

Blue Jays General Manager Ross Atkins emphasized that securing Guerrero Jr. long-term was the organizations top priority and opens the door for additional moves to build a championship-caliber roster around their franchise cornerstone. Having Vlad locked up gives us the foundation to make the moves necessary to compete with the best teams in baseball, Atkins said. This contract signals our commitment to winning at the highest level.

The contract makes Guerrero Jr. one of the highest-paid players in baseball and reflects the premium organizations are willing to pay for elite offensive production from the first base position. The deal also includes performance incentives that could push the total value above $360 million if Guerrero Jr. continues his current trajectory of excellence.

Toronto ownership has faced criticism in recent years for their unwillingness to spend on elite talent, making this contract a clear statement that the franchise is serious about competing for championships. With Guerrero Jr. locked up through 2036, the Blue Jays now have the cornerstone piece around which they can build sustained success in the competitive American League East division that includes the Yankees, Red Sox, and Orioles.
