Novak Djokovic Advances to Dubai Semifinals After Comeback Victory
Novak Djokovic demonstrated his championship mentality once again Thursday, rallying from a set down to defeat fifth-seeded Andrey Rublev 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships.
The 36-year-old Serbian, seeking his sixth Dubai title, appeared to be in trouble early as Rublev dominated the first set with his aggressive baseline power. The Russian broke serve twice and seemed to have found the formula to trouble the 24-time Grand Slam champion with his heavy topspin forehand and consistent depth.
However, Djokovic made crucial tactical adjustments at the start of the second set, moving further behind the baseline to give himself more time and beginning to redirect Rublevs pace with surgical precision. The transformation was immediate, as Djokovic broke serve in the fourth game and never looked back.
The third set was vintage Djokovic, as he raised his level to another gear entirely. His return of serve became virtually impenetrable, and he began constructing points with the patience and craft that has defined his legendary career. Rublev, clearly frustrated by his inability to maintain his early advantage, made several unforced errors at crucial moments.
Djokovic broke serve twice in the decisive set, converting his first match point after two hours and 18 minutes of play. The victory improves his head-to-head record against Rublev to 5-1 and extends his winning streak in Dubai to 12 matches dating back to his last appearance in 2023.
In the semifinals, Djokovic will face either third-seeded Daniil Medvedev or unseeded qualifier Christopher Eubanks, who play their quarterfinal match Friday. The Serbian is seeking his first ATP title of 2026 after a somewhat quiet start to the season by his lofty standards.
This comeback victory showcases that Djokovic remains as dangerous as ever, particularly in the business end of tournaments where his experience and mental fortitude often prove decisive. At 36, he continues to defy Father Time and remains one of the most formidable competitors on the ATP Tour.
