All Blacks beat Wallabies 50-19 to retain Bledisloe Cup
New Zealand retained the Bledisloe Cup with a 50-19 victory over Australia at Eden Park on Saturday, turning a three-point half-time advantage into a decisive win. ABC reported that the result handed Les Kiss his first defeat as Wallabies head coach and extended Australia's wait for victory at the Auckland ground to 40 years.
Watch the highlights:
Australia had opened the scoring through Tom Wright, with Ben Donaldson and Max Jorgensen involved in the move that created his try. According to Rugby Australia's live report, New Zealand answered through Peter Lakai and Tupou Vaa'i, before a Damian McKenzie penalty moved the hosts into a 17-7 lead.
The Wallabies recovered before the interval when Donaldson broke through and found captain Harry Wilson in support for a try. That reduced the deficit to 17-14. Australia then created a promising attacking position early in the second half, only to concede a penalty while setting up a maul near New Zealand's line.
Cam Roigard scored around the ruck in the 50th minute, and captain Codie Taylor followed with a close-range try five minutes later, Rugby Australia reported. Those scores took New Zealand to 31-14, leaving Australia needing to recover from a much larger deficit than it had faced at the break.
ABC's coverage recorded further tries from Leroy Carter and replacement Josh Moorby as the lead grew to 43-14. Josh Nasser responded for Australia from a driving maul, but Will Jordan scored at the end and McKenzie converted to bring New Zealand's total to 50.
Wilson told Nine after the match that Australia had failed to win important moments and had struggled to regain possession, according to ABC. Wright also pointed to missed opportunities, saying the Wallabies had not converted field position into enough points and had allowed New Zealand to punish their mistakes.
The teams meet again in Sydney on October 17, a date confirmed by New Zealand Rugby's match information. With the cup already retained, the return fixture gives Australia an immediate opportunity to respond to the Auckland defeat.
