O'Shea heads late winner as Ipswich overturn Fulham lead
Ipswich Town scored twice late on to beat Fulham 2-1 at Portman Road on Saturday, overturning Ryan Sessegnon's second-half opener. Abdoul Ouattara equalised from distance before captain Dara O'Shea headed the winner in stoppage time. Sky Sports reported that the result left Fulham still searching for a first Premier League victory under Alvaro Arbeloa after six matches.
Watch the highlights:
The first half ended goalless, although both sides had opportunities. According to TWTD's match report, Julio Enciso shot wide for Ipswich and Christian Walton tipped over an effort from Sander Berge. Gonzalo Garcia also missed a promising opening for Fulham, while Daizen Maeda repeatedly found space down Ipswich's right without turning those attacks into a goal.
Sessegnon broke the deadlock in the 55th minute after Ipswich failed to clear the danger from a corner. He collected the loose ball outside the area and drove his shot into the bottom corner. Ipswich almost answered three minutes later, but Emersonn's close-range header struck a post. Oscar Bobb then shot over as Fulham sought a second goal.
Gary O'Neil made changes as Ipswich chased the game, bringing on Jack Clarke and Exequiel Palacios before introducing Zian Flemming and Chuba Akpom. TWTD reported that substitute Sindre Walle Egeli later forced Bernd Leno into a save from a tight angle. The visitors were still ahead as the match entered its final minutes, despite the mounting pressure.
Ouattara finally beat Leno with a long-range strike, and Clarke then supplied the free-kick that O'Shea headed in during the first minute of added time. Fulham appealed for offside, but the goal stood after a VAR check, TWTD reported. Walton still had to save a late effort from Kevin to protect Ipswich's newly acquired lead.
The win was Ipswich's third of the league season. Fulham remained in the relegation zone with two points, seven fewer than their opponents. Speaking after the match, O'Neil praised his players' persistence and the contribution of his substitutes, Sky Sports reported. Arbeloa acknowledged the need for points while saying he remained confident in his players.
