Newcastle Advance as Barnes Strikes Twice Against West Brom

Harvey Barnes scored twice as a halftime substitute to give Newcastle United a 3-2 Carabao Cup victory over West Bromwich Albion at St James' Park. The result sent Newcastle into the third round and delivered Matthias Jaissle's first competitive win since he replaced Eddie Howe as head coach, according to The Guardian's match report.

West Brom took the lead in the 19th minute through Isaac Price. The midfielder curled a 25-yard free-kick around Newcastle's wall and beat debutant goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen at his near post. The Championship side's midfield and fluid formation caused Newcastle problems during the opening stages, building on the confidence of two league wins to begin their season.

Newcastle's equaliser brought together three recent arrivals. Eighteen-year-old Sean Steur carried the ball forward and found Amar Dedic, whose cross was converted from close range by Bazoumana Toure. It was Toure's first Newcastle goal, while Dedic, a £30 million signing from Benfica, provided an early demonstration of his delivery from right-back.

Jaissle replaced Toure with Barnes at the interval, and the change produced a goal three minutes into the second half. Barnes reacted to a loose ball after a corner and finished from close range at the second attempt after his initial shot was blocked. Newcastle had overturned the deficit, but West Brom remained in the tie.

Price levelled from the penalty spot after Lewis Hall was penalised for handball, giving the West Brom midfielder his second goal of the match. With extra time approaching, Barnes struck again in the 81st minute, meeting another low Dedic cross and directing his finish beyond goalkeeper Matt Ingram. Dedic ended the night with a role in all three Newcastle goals.

West Brom manager James Morrison said his side had pushed Newcastle to the end and caused the hosts problems. Newcastle's reward is an away match against Millwall in the third round, with those ties scheduled for September. Before kickoff, the home crowd was also introduced to Newcastle's £52 million signing Nico Gonzalez, the holding midfielder who arrived from Manchester City.
