Carlos Alcaraz Withdraws from Indian Wells Semifinals Due to Ankle Injury, Casts Doubt on Clay Season
The world No. 2 suffered the injury during his quarterfinal victory and will undergo further evaluation to determine the extent of the damage.

Carlos Alcaraz was forced to withdraw from his Indian Wells semifinal match Friday morning due to an ankle injury sustained during his quarterfinal victory over Tommy Paul, casting doubt over the Spaniard's preparation for the upcoming clay court season. The world No. 2 underwent extensive treatment overnight but was unable to take the court against Jannik Sinner, handing the Italian a walkover into Sunday's final where he will face either Daniil Medvedev or Taylor Fritz.

The injury occurred late in the second set of Alcaraz's match against Paul when the 22-year-old rolled his right ankle while chasing down a wide forehand. The two-time Grand Slam champion immediately called for the trainer and received extensive treatment during a lengthy medical timeout, but managed to complete the match and secure a straight-sets victory despite visible discomfort.

Alcaraz underwent an MRI scan on Thursday evening that revealed a Grade 2 lateral ankle sprain, which typically requires 2-4 weeks of rehabilitation depending on the severity. The timing couldn't be worse for the Spanish star, who was building momentum heading into the clay court season where he has historically performed his best tennis, including his breakthrough French Open victory in 2022.

Tournament doctors recommended immediate withdrawal from the semifinals to prevent further damage, emphasizing that playing through the injury could potentially sideline Alcaraz for months rather than weeks. The decision was made jointly by Alcaraz's team and tournament medical staff after the player attempted to practice Friday morning but experienced significant pain and instability.

"Obviously I'm devastated to have to withdraw, especially playing so well this week," Alcaraz said during an emotional press conference at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. "The ankle doesn't feel stable enough to compete at this level, and we don't want to risk making it worse. The clay season is so important for me, and we need to make sure I'm completely healthy for Monte Carlo and the French Open."

The withdrawal represents a significant blow to both the Indian Wells tournament and tennis fans who were anticipating a blockbuster semifinal between two of the sport's brightest young stars. Alcaraz and Sinner have developed one of tennis' most compelling rivalries, with their matches consistently producing exceptional tennis and dramatic finishes.

Alcaraz's injury also raises concerns about his preparation for the French Open, where he will be defending champion and entering as one of the favorites. The Monte Carlo Masters in three weeks represents his likely return date, though his team emphasized that no timeline has been established and his recovery will be monitored daily.

For Sinner, the walkover provides an unexpected path to his first Masters 1000 final, though the Italian would have preferred to earn the opportunity through competition. The 22-year-old has been in excellent form throughout the tournament and will now face fresh legs in Sunday's final as he seeks his second Masters 1000 title and biggest career victory on American soil.
