49ers survive Commanders comeback to stay unbeaten at 6-0
San Francisco held off Washington 23-17 after a 20-point lead narrowed to six. Christian McCaffrey scored twice as the 49ers moved to 6-0.

San Francisco survived Washington's second-half comeback to win 23-17 on Monday night and extend its unbeaten start to 6-0. Christian McCaffrey scored twice on the ground, while Brock Purdy connected with George Kittle for another touchdown. Washington's official team reporting described a contest that changed sharply after the 49ers established a commanding early advantage.

Watch the highlights:

According to Commanders senior writer Zach Selby, San Francisco outgained Washington 303-90 in the first half and collected 17 first downs. Purdy completed 17 of 22 passes for 214 yards before the break, finding seven different receivers. Washington struggled to sustain its own possessions despite individual gains that took the offense into San Francisco territory.

One missed opportunity came after K'Lavon Chaisson forced a McCaffrey fumble. Washington failed to turn the turnover into points, with a sack ending its next possession. San Francisco then assembled a 14-play touchdown drive, finished by McCaffrey from one yard out. The score left the visitors trailing 20-3, with their early chances to reduce the deficit gone.

Washington's official game blog recorded the margin reaching 23-3 before Jayden Daniels began cutting into it. His touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs brought the Commanders within 13 points late in the third quarter. A subsequent scoring throw to Rachaad White made it 23-17, leaving more than nine minutes for Washington to pursue a lead it had not held.

The Commanders' defense kept that opportunity alive, getting the ball back after the second touchdown. But a later drive ended when Treylon Burks could not complete a catch near the goal line. Washington earned one more possession, only for Daniels to be sacked before releasing a pass on the final play, ending the comeback attempt and preserving San Francisco's six-point advantage.

Selby reported that Daniels finished with 300 passing yards, two touchdowns and 29 completions. Washington outgained San Francisco 224-72 after halftime but could not overcome its first-half shortcomings. The Commanders now enter their bye week, with two home games to follow, beginning against Philadelphia. For San Francisco, the late defensive stops secured a sixth victory in six games.
