49ers withstand Commanders comeback to reach 6-0 with 23-17 win
San Francisco survived a second-half rally by Washington to remain unbeaten. Christian McCaffrey scored twice before the 49ers defense secured a 23-17 victory.

San Francisco improved to 6-0 on Monday night with a 23-17 victory over Washington, surviving a comeback that turned a 20-point advantage into a tense finish. Christian McCaffrey supplied two rushing touchdowns, while Brock Purdy threw a scoring pass to George Kittle. The Commanders' official game coverage confirmed the result and the late defensive stops that protected San Francisco's lead.

Watch the highlights:

The 49ers established control on their opening possession, with Purdy finding Kittle to complete a nine-play touchdown drive. Washington answered with Drew Stevens' 51-yard field goal after a 27-yard completion to Terry McLaurin. McCaffrey then scored from one yard out, although a missed extra point left San Francisco ahead 13-3 rather than extending the margin to 11 points.

Washington had opportunities to interrupt that early momentum but failed to turn them into points. A fourth-down attempt ended without a completion, and K'Lavon Chaisson's forced fumble against McCaffrey brought only a three-and-out from the offense. McCaffrey's second touchdown finished a 14-play possession before halftime. According to Commanders senior writer Zach Selby, San Francisco outgained Washington 303-90 in the first half and collected 17 first downs.

An Eddy Pineiro field goal pushed the advantage to 23-3 after the break. Washington finally reached the end zone through a Jayden Daniels pass to Stefon Diggs near the end of the third quarter. Daniels later connected with Rachaad White for another touchdown, cutting the deficit to six points with more than nine minutes remaining, according to Washington's gameday blog.

The Commanders' defense kept providing chances, but the offense could not complete the recovery. Treylon Burks failed to secure a pass near the goal line on a late fourth down. Washington regained possession for one final attempt to move ahead, only for Daniels to be sacked before he could release a throw on the last play.

Daniels finished with 300 passing yards, 29 completions and two touchdowns, Selby reported. Washington outgained San Francisco 224-72 after halftime, a reversal of the first-half balance that still left the visitors short. The Commanders now enter their bye week before consecutive home games, beginning with a division meeting against Philadelphia.
