Lyon hold off Crystal Palace comeback to spoil Pierre Sage's return
Lyon beat Crystal Palace 3–2 in the Europa League despite two second-half replies from the visitors. Goals from Corentin Tolisso, Ernest Nuamah and Pavel Sulc secured victory against former Lyon manager Pierre Sage.

Lyon defeated Crystal Palace 3–2 at the Groupama Stadium in the Europa League, denying Pierre Sage a winning return to his former club. The Guardian reported that Palace twice reduced a two-goal deficit after the interval but could not complete their recovery, leaving the home side with victory after a five-goal contest.

Watch the highlights:

Corentin Tolisso gave Lyon the lead in the eighth minute. According to Maxifoot's first-half account, Palace failed to clear properly following a corner and the midfielder converted from inside the six-yard box. Lyon then controlled a largely low-tempo opening period, with few further opportunities as the hosts protected their early advantage rather than pushing the pace.

Keito Nakamura helped create another opening for Lyon before the break, supplying Ernest Nuamah close to goal. Jaydee Canvot intervened to block that attempt, preventing the home side from immediately extending their lead. The sequence ended without a goal, but Lyon would find another opening for the same attacker before half-time. The chance nevertheless brought Nuamah into a dangerous central position after Nakamura's work had opened a route through the visiting defence.

Nuamah made the next opportunity count in first-half stoppage time. Maxifoot reported that the Ghanaian moved in front of Tyrick Mitchell before finishing past Walter Benitez in the second added minute. That goal changed the half-time margin from one to two, giving Palace a substantially larger deficit to address when the teams returned for the second half.

Yéremy Pino scored five minutes after the restart to bring Palace back into contention. Pavel Sulc subsequently restored Lyon's two-goal cushion, before substitute Daichi Kamada struck with nine minutes remaining. The Guardian described an improved second-half showing from Palace, but their two responses were not enough to take a point from the match.

Sage's return came days after Palace had beaten Nottingham Forest, managed by his predecessor Oliver Glasner, at Selhurst Park in the Premier League. He had spent 14 months in charge of Lyon.
