Ja Morant Drops 47 Points as Grizzlies Stun Lakers 129-123 in Overtime Thriller
The explosive point guard delivers a career-defining performance to lead Memphis to a statement victory over Los Angeles at FedExForum.

Ja Morant delivered the performance of his young career Thursday night at FedExForum, exploding for 47 points in regulation and overtime to lead the Memphis Grizzlies to a stunning 129-123 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. The 24-year-old point guard was absolutely unstoppable throughout the contest, shooting 17-of-28 from the field and 6-of-10 from three-point range while adding 9 rebounds and 8 assists in a complete display that had the Memphis crowd on their feet for the final 20 minutes.

Morant saved his best for the extra period, scoring 11 of Memphis' 15 overtime points while repeatedly attacking the rim with the explosive athleticism that has made him one of the NBA's most electrifying players. His driving layup with 47 seconds remaining in overtime put the Grizzlies ahead for good, capping off a masterful individual effort that overshadowed strong performances from LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

The Lakers appeared to be in control for much of regulation, building leads as large as 12 points behind James' facilitating and Davis' interior dominance. However, Morant single-handedly kept Memphis within striking distance, repeatedly answering Lakers runs with spectacular individual plays that showcased his improved outside shooting and decision-making.

"That's the type of performance that separates superstars from good players," Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins said during his post-game press conference. "Ja was absolutely phenomenal tonight. His aggression, his shot-making, his leadership in the clutch moments - that's what championship teams need from their best player. If he can play at this level consistently, we can beat anyone in this league."

The victory was massive for Memphis' playoff hopes, moving them to 36-34 on the season and keeping pace with other teams fighting for play-in tournament positioning in the competitive Western Conference. Morant's explosive return to form comes at a crucial time as the Grizzlies look to secure their spot in the postseason.

For the Lakers, the defeat was particularly frustrating given their strong position heading into the final minutes of regulation. James finished with 31 points and 11 assists while Davis contributed 28 points and 14 rebounds, but Los Angeles couldn't find answers for Morant's relentless attacks and clutch shot-making when the game was on the line. The loss dropped the Lakers to 40-30 and highlighted their ongoing struggles to close out games against quality opponents. With 12 games remaining in the regular season, both teams will need to maintain their level of play if they hope to secure favorable playoff positioning heading into what promises to be a highly competitive postseason in the Western Conference.
