Jannik Sinner Advances to Dubai ATP Semifinals After Three-Set Thriller
World No. 2 overcomes early deficit to defeat Daniil Medvedev in a gripping quarterfinal match lasting over three hours.

World No. 2 Jannik Sinner staged a remarkable comeback to defeat former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships on Thursday evening. The thrilling encounter, which lasted three hours and 12 minutes, showcased the highest level of tennis between two of the sport's elite players.

Sinner found himself in early trouble as Medvedev's aggressive baseline game and precise serving earned the Russian the opening set. The 24-year-old Italian struggled with his timing on groundstrokes and committed 18 unforced errors in the first set alone, appearing rattled by Medvedev's tactical prowess.

"Daniil played incredible tennis in the first set," Sinner acknowledged during his post-match interview. "I had to find a way to stay calm and trust my game plan. The key was staying patient and waiting for my opportunities to attack."

The turning point came in the second set tiebreak, where Sinner elevated his level dramatically. After falling behind 3-1, he won five of the next six points, including two spectacular cross-court winners that had the capacity crowd at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre on their feet. His improved court positioning and aggressive return of serve began to neutralize Medvedev's advantages.

Sinner carried this momentum into the decisive third set, breaking Medvedev's serve early and maintaining his advantage through superior physical conditioning. As the match wore on, the 28-year-old Russian appeared to struggle with the humid Dubai conditions, while Sinner seemed to grow stronger with each passing game.

The victory sets up a semifinal clash with either Carlos Alcaraz or Andrey Rublev, whose quarterfinal match was postponed due to a brief rain delay earlier in the day. This semifinal appearance continues Sinner's excellent early-season form, having already claimed titles in Adelaide and reached the final in Brisbane.

"The level of competition here in Dubai is always exceptional," said Sinner. "Every match is a battle, and I'm pleased with how I fought back tonight. But the tournament is not over yet - I need to recover well and prepare for what will be another difficult semifinal."

Medvedev, who was seeking his third Dubai title, graciously accepted the defeat while praising his opponent's resilience. The Russian will now turn his attention to next week's ATP 500 event in Acapulco, where he is the defending champion.

The Dubai Tennis Championships continues to attract the world's top players, with prize money exceeding $3 million and crucial ATP ranking points available in the final weeks before the Miami Open.
