Tottenham remain goalless after four league games as Everton hold firm

Tottenham's wait for a first Premier League goal of the season continued with a 0-0 home draw against Everton on Saturday. According to The Guardian's match report, Spurs have now failed to score in their opening four league fixtures for the first time in the club's history. Everton remained unbeaten, with neither side able to convert its opportunities.

The result followed Tottenham's goalless draw at Nottingham Forest, where they had failed to register a shot on target. They managed to test Jordan Pickford this time, but the final whistle brought boos from the home crowd. The Guardian reported that Spurs have won only one home league match this year, against Everton on the final day of last season, when a 1-0 victory secured their survival.

Tottenham began with an energetic spell of possession, with Rodrigo Bentancur involved in midfield and Savio offering a threat. Clear openings were scarce, however. Jan Paul van Hecke sent a half-volley over from a difficult angle after an Andy Robertson free-kick. At the other end, James Garner tested Antonin Kinsky with a free-kick late in the first half, producing the match's first shot on target.

Mateus Fernandes tried his luck from distance in the 47th minute, but Everton became more dangerous after the interval. Tyrique George got past Archie Gray and crossed for Thierno Barry, whose header struck Kinsky before going off target. Gray was covering at right-back for the injured Pedro Porro, while Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi was also missing left-back Destiny Udogie through injury, the report said.

Kinsky then gave Everton another opening when his misplaced pass reached Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall near the edge of the penalty area. The goalkeeper recovered to block the subsequent attempt. Former Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson also failed to capitalise, shooting high in the 75th minute after Dewsbury-Hall set him up. Those missed chances left David Moyes's side without a breakthrough despite their second-half opportunities.

Tottenham had a late chance of their own when Pickford's poor clearance found substitute James Maddison. The ball was moved to fellow replacement Lucas Bergvall, whose low shot was comfortably saved. Pickford's stop preserved Everton's clean sheet and ensured Spurs finished another league game without scoring, despite improving on their shot-on-target return from the previous weekend.
