Edmonton Oilers Clinch Playoff Spot with 4-1 Victory Over Seattle Kraken
Connor McDavid scores twice as Edmonton secures their postseason berth with a convincing win at Rogers Place, ending years of playoff disappointment.

The Edmonton Oilers officially punched their ticket to the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a commanding 4-1 victory over the Seattle Kraken at Rogers Place on Sunday night, ending a frustrating drought that had seen the franchise miss the postseason in three of the past four years. Connor McDavid led the celebration with two goals and an assist, while the capacity crowd erupted in relief and jubilation when the final horn sounded.

McDavid opened the scoring just 4:27 into the first period with a trademark rush up the ice, beating Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer with a perfectly placed wrist shot to the top corner. The captain doubled Edmonton's lead in the second period with another spectacular individual effort, dancing around two defenders before sliding the puck five-hole for his 44th goal of the season.

"It feels incredible to finally get over that hump," McDavid said during the post-game celebration on ice. "This organization and these fans deserve to be in the playoffs, and we've worked so hard to get to this point. Now we can focus on making some noise in the postseason and showing what this team is really capable of."

The Oilers' playoff clinching comes after a remarkable second-half surge that saw them win 20 of their final 30 games. Leon Draisaitl added his 40th goal of the season in the third period, while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins contributed two assists to help seal the victory that moved Edmonton into second place in the Pacific Division.

Seattle managed just one goal from Jordan Eberle late in the third period, but by then the outcome was already decided and the celebration had begun in earnest. Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner made 28 saves to earn his 35th victory of the season, capping off what has been a career year for the 27-year-old netminder.

"Stuart has been our backbone all season long," said Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft. "His consistency and big saves in crucial moments have been a huge reason why we're celebrating tonight. Connor and Leon get the headlines, but Stuart has been equally important to our success."

The playoff berth represents a massive relief for an organization that has faced intense scrutiny despite having two of the game's best players in McDavid and Draisaitl. With 16 games remaining in the regular season, Edmonton now turns its focus toward securing home-ice advantage for the first round and building momentum for what they hope will be a deep playoff run.

For the Kraken, the loss was another setback in their own playoff chase, as they remain four points out of the final wild-card spot with time running out. Seattle will need a miraculous finish to extend their season beyond April, while Edmonton can finally start planning for their first playoff appearance since 2023.
