NBA Trade Deadline Shakeup: Lakers Acquire All-Star Forward in Blockbuster Deal
The Los Angeles Lakers have made a significant move ahead of the February 6th trade deadline, acquiring a proven All-Star forward in exchange for multiple assets.

The Los Angeles Lakers have pulled off one of the most significant trades of the 2026 season, acquiring veteran All-Star forward Marcus Johnson from the Portland Trail Blazers in a deal that could reshape the Western Conference playoff picture.

The trade, announced this morning, sends Johnson along with a protected first-round pick to Los Angeles in exchange for young forward Rui Hachimura, guard Dennis Schroder, and two future second-round selections. The move addresses the Lakers long-standing need for additional scoring depth and veteran leadership as they push for a playoff position.

Johnson, 28, is averaging 22.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game this season while shooting an impressive 38.2% from three-point range. His ability to create his own shot and stretch the floor should provide the perfect complement to LeBron James and Anthony Davis in the frontcourt. The 6-foot-8 forward brings playoff experience and has been one of the most consistent performers in the league over the past four seasons.

Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka expressed confidence in the acquisition during a press conference this afternoon. We identified Marcus as a player who can immediately impact winning and provide the scoring punch we needed, Pelinka stated. His versatility on both ends of the floor makes him an ideal fit for what we are trying to accomplish.

For Portland, the trade represents a shift toward rebuilding around their young core. The Trail Blazers have struggled this season and appear committed to developing their younger players while accumulating assets for future moves. Hachimura and Schroder provide immediate depth, while the draft capital gives Portland flexibility in upcoming trade periods.

The Lakers, currently sitting in 9th place in the Western Conference, hope Johnson can help them secure a playoff berth in what has been a competitive season. With James in his 22nd season and Davis dealing with injury concerns, adding a reliable third option could be crucial for their postseason aspirations. Johnson is expected to make his Lakers debut Wednesday night against the Phoenix Suns.
