Djokovic Withdraws from Dubai Tennis Championships Due to Injury
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has made the difficult decision to withdraw from the Dubai Tennis Championships, citing a persistent wrist injury that has been bothering him since his Australian Open campaign last month. The 24-time Grand Slam champion's absence creates a significant void in the prestigious ATP 500 tournament's field.
Djokovic's withdrawal was announced through an official statement from his management team, revealing that the Serbian star has been managing discomfort in his right wrist for several weeks. The injury first became apparent during his quarter-final match at the Australian Open, where he was seen receiving treatment between sets. Despite completing that tournament, medical scans have since revealed the need for extended rest and rehabilitation.
"This is not a decision I take lightly," Djokovic said in his statement. "Dubai has always been special to me, and I have incredible memories from this tournament. However, my medical team has advised that continuing to play without proper recovery could lead to a more serious, long-term issue. I must prioritize my health for the remainder of the season."
The withdrawal significantly impacts the tournament's draw, with second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz now becoming the top favorite. The young Spaniard, who has been in exceptional form this season, expressed disappointment at missing the opportunity to face Djokovic but acknowledged the veteran's wise decision to prioritize his long-term health.
Tournament director Salah Tahlak confirmed that lucky loser Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard from France will take Djokovic's place in the main draw. The 6-foot-8 Frenchman, known for his powerful serve, will face a qualifier in the first round. Mpetshi Perricard expressed gratitude for the unexpected opportunity, calling it "a dream come true" to compete in such a prestigious event.
Djokovic's withdrawal also affects the ATP rankings race, as he was defending significant points from last year's Dubai title. This opens the door for competitors like Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner to potentially close the gap at the top of the rankings. The Serbian star is expected to return for the Indian Wells Masters in March, where he will begin preparations for the clay court season and the French Open.
