Coco Gauff Advances to Dubai Championship Quarterfinals
The American star defeats former world No. 3 in straight sets to continue her strong start to 2026.

Coco Gauff continued her impressive early-season form at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, defeating former world No. 3 Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-2 in the Round of 16 to advance to her fourth quarterfinal of the 2026 season.

The 21-year-old American, currently ranked fifth in the world, dominated from the baseline in a match that lasted just 84 minutes on Tuesday afternoon. Gauff's aggressive returning and consistent groundstrokes proved too much for the experienced Ukrainian, who struggled to find her rhythm throughout the encounter.

Gauff broke serve early in the first set and maintained her advantage despite Svitolina's attempts to mount a comeback. The turning point came in the seventh game when Gauff saved three break points with some spectacular defensive play, including a running backhand winner that brought the Dubai crowd to their feet.

"I felt really good out there today," Gauff said in her post-match interview. "Elina is such a tough competitor, so I knew I had to bring my best tennis. I'm happy with how I stayed focused and executed my game plan throughout the match."

The second set was more straightforward for the young American, as she quickly established a 4-1 lead with two early breaks of serve. Svitolina, who won this tournament in 2018 and 2020, appeared to be struggling with movement issues and couldn't match Gauff's court coverage and pace.

This victory marks Gauff's 12th win in 14 matches to start the 2026 season, following her semifinal appearance at the Australian Open and title run at the Adelaide International. Her strong form has many experts predicting this could be a breakthrough year for the talented youngster.

In the quarterfinals, Gauff will face either second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka or rising Czech star Linda Fruhvirtova, with that match scheduled for later Tuesday evening. The winner of that encounter will be heavily favored against either opponent, given her current confidence and level of play.

"I'm taking it one match at a time, but I definitely feel like my game is in a good place right now," Gauff added. "The hard work in the off-season is paying off, and I'm excited to see how far I can go this week."
