Carlos Alcaraz Defeats Daniil Medvedev 7-6, 6-4 to Reach Indian Wells Final
The Spanish star overcomes a slow start to defeat the former world No. 1 in straight sets, advancing to his first Indian Wells final since 2022.

Carlos Alcaraz produced one of his finest performances of 2026 on Sunday, defeating Daniil Medvedev 7-6(4), 6-4 in a captivating semifinal to reach the BNP Paribas Open final at Indian Wells. The 22-year-old Spaniard overcame a sluggish start and some brilliant shot-making from the Russian to advance to his first final at the California desert tournament since his breakthrough victory four years ago.

The match was a tactical chess match between two of tennis's most intelligent players, with Medvedev's defensive skills and court craft testing Alcaraz's patience and power throughout the opening set. The Russian took an early 3-1 lead, using his signature deep returns and defensive positioning to frustrate the Spanish star and draw errors from his usually reliable forehand.

However, Alcaraz gradually found his rhythm as the set progressed, beginning to dictate play with his aggressive baseline shots and improved court positioning. The turning point came in the first-set tiebreak, where Alcaraz's superior power and athleticism proved decisive as he won seven of the final nine points to claim the opener.

"The first set was really tough," Alcaraz said during his on-court interview. "Daniil was playing incredible tennis and making me work for every point. I had to stay patient and wait for my opportunities. Once I got ahead in the tiebreak, I felt much more confident about my game."

The second set saw Alcaraz playing with increased freedom and aggression, frequently coming forward to finish points at the net and using his devastating drop shot to great effect. The decisive break came in the seventh game, when a series of winners from both wings allowed the Spaniard to take a 4-3 lead that he would not relinquish.

Medvedev, despite the loss, showed flashes of the form that has made him one of the tour's most consistent performers over the past five years. The tall Russian created several break point opportunities throughout the match but was unable to convert when it mattered most, particularly struggling to handle Alcaraz's pace and variety during crucial moments.

"Carlos played at a very high level today," Medvedev acknowledged graciously. "He was more aggressive than me in the important moments, and his shot-making in the tiebreak was exceptional. He deserves to be in the final, and I'm sure he'll play great tennis there as well."

Alcaraz's victory sets up a blockbuster final against defending champion Taylor Fritz, who defeated Tommy Paul in the other semifinal. The all-American final on the men's side has generated enormous excitement, particularly with Fritz seeking to become the first American man to win Indian Wells since Andre Agassi in 2001.

For Alcaraz, reaching the final represents another step in his continued development as one of tennis's elite players. His combination of power, court coverage, and tactical awareness was on full display against Medvedev, suggesting he's ready to add another Masters 1000 title to his growing collection.
