San Francisco 49ers Earn Recognition Among NFL Top Five Most Improved Teams Following Strategic Free Agency Moves
ESPN ranks San Francisco alongside Chiefs, Panthers, Patriots and Steelers after signing Mike Evans to three-year deal and addressing multiple position needs through calculated roster additions.

The San Francisco 49ers have earned recognition among the NFL top five most improved teams during the early free agency period, according to ESPN Aaron Schatz, who praised the franchise strategic approach to addressing critical roster needs while maintaining financial flexibility.

San Francisco headlined their offseason with the blockbuster signing of wide receiver Mike Evans to a three-year, $42.4 million contract worth up to $60 million, immediately upgrading their receiving corps with one of the league most proven veterans.

Schatz specifically highlighted Evans as the team best signing this offseason, emphasizing how the 6-foot-5, 231-pound receiver fills multiple voids in the 49ers offensive system. The 49ers made only one major signing, but it was a really good one, Schatz wrote in his analysis.

Evans represents exactly the kind of receiver that the 49ers were missing in several crucial ways. His imposing physical presence provides a large perimeter threat capable of winning contested catches, while his veteran leadership offers an important locker room presence for a team with championship aspirations.

The concern surrounding Evans centers on his health after a disappointing 2025 season where hamstring and collarbone injuries limited him to just eight games, ending his remarkable streak of 11 consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons. The 49ers must hope they acquire the productive Evans of his prime rather than the injury-prone version from last year.

Beyond the marquee Evans addition, San Francisco demonstrated calculated roster building by bringing back linebacker Dre Greenlaw on a one-year deal, reuniting him with All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner to restore their formidable defensive partnership.

The organization also addressed depth concerns across multiple positions, adding swing tackle Vederian Lowe, cornerback Nate Hobbs, and punter Corliss Waitman while re-signing linebacker Luke Gifford to maintain continuity within their defensive system.

Schatz praised the underrated acquisition of Lowe, whose versatility provides crucial insurance given the uncertainty surrounding veteran tackle Trent Williams contract situation. Lowe is not the best player out there, but he fits well in San Francisco as a swing tackle just in case something happens with Trent Williams contract situation, Schatz explained.

While Lowe pass block win rate of 89.2 percent fell below average last season, his 75.7 percent run block win rate exceeded league standards, making him a valuable addition for the 49ers zone-blocking scheme that prioritizes run game effectiveness.

The 49ers supplemented their free agency moves by trading for defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, addressing multiple areas including wide receiver, linebacker, defensive line, cornerback, and offensive line depth while maintaining salary cap flexibility for additional moves.

Financial considerations remain important for San Francisco, as extending Williams contract would significantly reduce his current $39 million cap hit while creating additional space for potential roster upgrades. The organization has positioned itself to make additional moves if opportunities arise.

The 2026 season represents a critical juncture for the 49ers, as several key players continue aging while multiple stars return from significant injuries. The pressure to maximize this championship window has intensified given the competitive landscape in the NFC.

ESPN recognition places San Francisco alongside the Kansas City Chiefs, Carolina Panthers, New England Patriots, and Pittsburgh Steelers as teams that have most improved their championship prospects through early free agency maneuvering.

The 49ers methodical approach contrasts with more aggressive strategies employed by other organizations, reflecting their confidence in existing core talent while strategically addressing specific weaknesses that could prevent championship success.

As the offseason progresses, San Francisco appears positioned to make additional strategic moves while maintaining the financial flexibility necessary to extend key players and pursue impact acquisitions if they become available.

The organization understands that championship windows close quickly in the modern NFL, making this offseason crucial for positioning themselves for what could be their best opportunity to capture another Super Bowl title with their current core group.
