France Defeats Ireland 31-24 to Keep Six Nations Championship Hopes Alive
Antoine Dupont leads brilliant French comeback in Paris as Les Bleus overcome early deficit to hand Ireland their first loss of the 2026 tournament.

France kept their Six Nations Championship hopes alive with a thrilling 31-24 victory over Ireland at Stade de France on Sunday, producing one of the tournament's most memorable performances to hand the defending champions their first defeat of 2026. Scrum-half Antoine Dupont was the star of the show, scoring two tries and orchestrating a remarkable second-half comeback that sent the Parisian crowd into raptures.

Ireland looked to be cruising toward another victory when they established a 17-3 lead after 28 minutes through tries from Josh van der Flier and Bundee Aki. The defending champions were playing with their trademark intensity and precision, seemingly on course to maintain their perfect record and extend their winning streak to 12 matches.

However, France responded with the kind of rugby that has made them one of the world's most exciting teams to watch. Dupont sparked the revival with a sensational solo try just before halftime, dancing through three Irish defenders to score under the posts and reduce the deficit to 17-10 at the break.

"We knew we had to stay calm and trust our game plan," said Dupont after the match. "Ireland is an incredible team, but we believed we could turn it around if we played our natural rugby. The crowd gave us so much energy, and we fed off that atmosphere in the second half."

The French fightback continued after the restart as winger Damian Penaud crossed for two tries in a devastating 15-minute spell that turned the match on its head. The Clermont flyer's pace and finishing ability proved too much for the Irish defense, which had been so solid throughout their championship campaign.

Ireland captain Johnny Sexton kept his team in contention with a penalty and a drop goal, but France sealed the victory when replacement prop Uini Atonio powered over from close range with eight minutes remaining. The crowd's celebrations were deafening as Les Bleus moved level with Ireland on points in the championship table.

"Credit to France - they played some outstanding rugby today," said Ireland coach Andy Farrell. "We had our chances to put the game away early, but they showed great character to come back. This setback doesn't define our campaign. We'll regroup and come back stronger."

With the victory, France moves into second place in the Six Nations standings, level on points with Ireland but trailing on points difference. Both teams now have everything to play for in the final round of matches, with England and Scotland also still mathematically in contention for the title.

The result sets up a thrilling conclusion to what has been one of the most competitive Six Nations tournaments in recent memory.
