Czech Republic knock Great Britain out of Billie Jean King Cup

Great Britain were eliminated from the Billie Jean King Cup after the Czech Republic won both singles matches in their quarter-final. Marie Bouzkova beat Sonay Kartal in three sets before Linda Noskova defeated Katie Boulter to settle the best-of-three tie. According to BBC Sport's Emily Salley, the result leaves Britain outside the semi-finals for the first time since 2023 and still seeking a first title.

Kartal's return from a six-month absence with a lower back injury ended in a 7-6 (7-2) 4-6 6-4 loss to Bouzkova. It was her first match since retiring injured in the fourth round at Indian Wells in March. Now ranked 127th, Kartal pushed the world number 26 for exactly three hours before the Czech player secured the opening point.

The British player broke early in the first set but immediately lost that advantage, and Bouzkova took control of the tie-break. Kartal established another early lead in the second set and this time preserved it to level the match. Her first double fault then gave Bouzkova a break for 4-2 in the decider. Kartal saved three match points and broke back, only for Bouzkova to break again and finish the contest.

Boulter needed to beat Noskova to keep Britain in contention but lost 6-2 7-6 (7-3) to the Wimbledon champion. Two double faults contributed to Boulter dropping serve in the opening game, and Noskova moved into a four-game lead. Boulter made the second set more competitive but did not earn a break point, with the world number six winning the tie-break to complete the Czech victory.

Britain captain Anne Keothavong defended her players' efforts, saying they had needed their best tennis and some luck against such strong opposition. All five members of the Czech squad were ranked above every British player in singles. Boulter, ranked 54th, was Britain's leading singles player. Keothavong also backed her decision to select Kartal, whose comeback performance offered encouragement despite the defeat.

The Czech Republic, 11-time champions, will meet either Kazakhstan or Spain in Friday's semi-finals. They are the only team at the Finals with two top-10 players, with Noskova joined in the squad by fellow Wimbledon finalist Karolina Muchova. For Britain, Kartal's competitive return was a positive within a quarter-final exit that extends their wait for the trophy.
