Serena Williams Announces Coaching Partnership with Former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka
In a stunning development that has sent shockwaves through the tennis world, Serena Williams announced Saturday that she will serve as a mentor coach to former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka, beginning immediately ahead of the upcoming ATP/WTA Indian Wells tournament. The partnership marks Williams' first formal coaching role since retiring from competitive tennis in September 2022.
The 42-year-old Williams, winner of 23 Grand Slam singles titles, will work alongside Osaka's existing coaching team led by Patrick Mouratoglou. The collaboration aims to help Osaka, currently ranked No. 47 in the world, return to the peak form that saw her capture four Grand Slam titles between 2018 and 2021.
"When Naomi approached me about this opportunity, I was immediately intrigued," Williams said during a press conference at the Ritz-Carlton in Indian Wells. "She's an incredibly talented player who has already proven she can win at the highest level. I believe my experience and perspective can help her rediscover that championship mentality."
Osaka, 26, has struggled with consistency since taking time away from tennis to focus on her mental health and start a family. The Japanese-American star gave birth to her daughter Shai in July 2023 and returned to competition at the Brisbane International in January 2024. Despite showing flashes of her former brilliance, she has yet to advance beyond the fourth round of a Grand Slam since her return.
"Having Serena in my corner feels surreal," Osaka explained. "She's not just one of the greatest players of all time, but someone who has navigated the pressures and expectations that come with being a champion. Her insights on managing the mental side of competition are invaluable."
The partnership came together through mutual connections in the tennis world, with both players sharing Mouratoglou as a former coach. Williams worked with the Frenchman during some of her most successful years, including her 2017 Australian Open victory while pregnant with daughter Olympia.
Financial terms of the coaching arrangement were not disclosed, though industry sources suggest it represents a significant investment in Osaka's comeback campaign. Williams will travel to select tournaments throughout the year, with a focus on Grand Slam preparation and big-match situations.
The tennis community has reacted with excitement to the news. Former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki called it "a perfect match," while current WTA stars have expressed anticipation for seeing how Williams' competitive wisdom translates to the coaching realm.
Osaka will make her first appearance with Williams courtside at next month's BNP Paribas Open, where she holds fond memories of reaching the final in 2018. The tournament represents an ideal testing ground for their new partnership, with both women eager to begin what they hope will be a journey back to Grand Slam glory.
