Hideki Matsuyama Wins Puerto Rico Open with Final-Round 66 at Grand Reserve Golf Club
The Japanese star fires a bogey-free 66 on Monday to come from three shots behind and claim his eighth PGA Tour victory with a clutch performance in Rio Grande.

Hideki Matsuyama delivered a flawless final-round performance on Monday afternoon, shooting a bogey-free 6-under 66 to come from three shots behind and win the Puerto Rico Open at Grand Reserve Golf Club. The 32-year-old Japanese star's clinical display in challenging windy conditions marked his eighth PGA Tour victory and first since the 2022 Sony Open, ending a nearly four-year drought with a masterful performance in Rio Grande.

Matsuyama entered the final day trailing overnight leader Erik van Rooyen by three strokes but quickly made up ground with birdies on four of his first seven holes. The former Masters champion never looked back from there, making three more birdies on the back nine while avoiding any mistakes to post a total of 19-under par and win by two shots.

"This victory means everything to me," Matsuyama said through his translator while holding the crystal trophy. "It's been a long time since I won on the PGA Tour, and to do it here in Puerto Rico with such great fans and in these conditions makes it very special. I stayed patient all week and trusted my game plan."

The victory was particularly impressive given the challenging conditions that Grand Reserve presented throughout the week, with swirling winds making club selection and ball-striking crucial. Matsuyama's precision iron play and exceptional putting were the keys to his success, as he ranked first in strokes gained approach and second in putting for the tournament.

Van Rooyen, despite shooting a respectable 2-under 70 in the final round, couldn't match Matsuyama's relentless consistency. The South African's runner-up finish was his best result on the PGA Tour since 2021 and demonstrated his continued improvement as he seeks his first tour victory.

"Hideki played incredible golf today," van Rooyen said after signing his scorecard. "He didn't make any mistakes and took advantage of his birdie opportunities. When someone plays bogey-free golf in these conditions, you have to tip your cap. He's a true champion and showed why today."

The triumph moves Matsuyama back into the top 20 in the Official World Golf Ranking and provides perfect momentum as the golf calendar shifts toward The Players Championship next week. His victory also secures his spot in several upcoming signature events that he had been in danger of missing.

Matsuyama's final-round 66 was the lowest score of the day by two shots and featured seven birdies against no bogeys. His approach shot to the par-4 16th hole, which he stuck to within three feet for a crucial birdie, epitomized the precision that carried him to victory.

The $1.26 million winner's check represents a significant boost for Matsuyama's season earnings and FedEx Cup standings. His victory comes at an ideal time as he prepares for the major championship season, with The Masters just five weeks away at Augusta National, where he won in 2021.

For Puerto Rico and Latin American golf fans, Matsuyama's victory provided another memorable moment at their home tournament. The enthusiastic galleries throughout the week demonstrated the growing popularity of professional golf in the region and the importance of international events like the Puerto Rico Open in developing the game globally.
