Viktor Hovland Takes Three-Shot Lead at Arnold Palmer Invitational with Stellar Second-Round 65
Viktor Hovland seized control of the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Friday afternoon at Bay Hill Club & Lodge, firing a brilliant 7-under 65 that featured seven birdies and a spectacular eagle to take a three-shot lead heading into the weekend at one of the PGA Tour most challenging venues.
The 29-year-old Norwegian was in complete command of his ball-striking throughout the second round, hitting 16 of 18 greens in regulation while needing just 27 putts on Bay Hill notoriously difficult putting surfaces. Hovland eagle came on the par-5 12th hole, where he holed a 35-foot putt for three that sent the gallery into raptures and established him as the clear leader.
I felt like everything clicked today, especially with my iron play, Hovland said after signing his scorecard. Bay Hill is such a demanding golf course that rewards precision, and I was able to execute my game plan perfectly. The eagle on 12 was obviously a huge momentum boost, but I am most proud of how patient I stayed throughout the round.
Hovland stellar round moves him to 11-under par for the tournament, three shots clear of defending champion Scottie Scheffler and rising star Ludvig Aberg, who both posted solid rounds of 69 to remain in contention. The leaderboard is tightly packed behind the leaders, with former major champions Collin Morikawa and Patrick Reed both sitting at 7-under par.
The performance represents a return to form for Hovland, who has struggled with consistency over the past 18 months but appears to have rediscovered the combination of precision and putting touch that made him one of the world top players. His coach Jonathan Yarwood has worked extensively with Hovland on course management and mental approach, changes that were evident in Friday composed round.
Scheffler, seeking his second consecutive Arnold Palmer Invitational title, acknowledged that Hovland level of play will be difficult to match over the weekend. Viktor played incredible golf today and deserved to take the lead, Scheffler said. Bay Hill rewards good iron play and putting, and he did both exceptionally well. I will need to be at my best to catch him.
Saturday third round is expected to feature challenging weather conditions with gusty winds predicted throughout the afternoon, which could significantly impact scoring and create opportunities for players to make moves on the leaderboard. Hovland methodical approach and excellent course management should serve him well in difficult conditions as he seeks his sixth PGA Tour victory.
