USA Swimming Names Olympic Roster Led by Katie Ledecky and Bobby Finke for 2026 World Championships
USA Swimming announced its 26-swimmer roster for the 2026 World Aquatics Championships on Sunday evening, featuring a perfect blend of veteran leadership and emerging talent that signals the program's strength heading into the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Seven-time Olympic champion Katie Ledecky and distance freestyle specialist Bobby Finke headline a squad that swimming officials believe could challenge for the overall medals title in Budapest this summer.
Ledecky, now 29, will compete in her signature events including the 800m and 1500m freestyle races where she remains virtually unbeatable on the international stage. The Stanford product has dominated distance swimming for over a decade and shows no signs of slowing down as she aims to add to her remarkable collection of 10 Olympic medals.
"This team represents the perfect combination of experience and youth that we need to compete at the highest level," said USA Swimming National Team Director Lindsay Mintenko during Sunday's announcement ceremony. "Katie continues to set the standard for excellence, while our young swimmers are showing they're ready to step up on the world stage. Budapest will be crucial preparation for what we hope will be a dominant performance in Los Angeles."
Finke, the Olympic champion in the 800m and 1500m freestyle, will spearhead the men's distance events alongside rising star David Johnston, who set American junior records in both events during the recent trials. The depth in distance events gives Team USA unprecedented strength in what has traditionally been a challenging area for American swimming.
The roster also features several breakthrough performers who could emerge as stars in Budapest, including 19-year-old sprint specialist Claire Weinstein and distance swimmer Luke Whitlock, who both set American records during the selection trials held last month in Greensboro. Their inclusion signals USA Swimming's commitment to developing the next generation of Olympic champions.
"Making this team has been my dream since I started swimming," said Weinstein, who will compete in the 50m and 100m freestyle events. "Training alongside swimmers like Katie and Bobby has pushed me to levels I never thought possible. I'm ready to show the world what American swimming is capable of in Budapest."
Veteran swimmers Lilly King (breaststroke) and Ryan Murphy (backstroke) round out a formidable squad that spans all four strokes and both sprint and distance events. King, a two-time Olympic champion, will be making her fourth appearance at World Championships, while Murphy brings invaluable experience from his three Olympic appearances.
The World Championships in Budapest, scheduled for July 12-28, will serve as the primary selection meet for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, making performances in Hungary crucial for swimmers hoping to compete on home soil. USA Swimming has set ambitious medal targets that would position the program as a dominant force heading into the LA Games.
Head coach Dave Durden emphasized the importance of the upcoming competition in developing team chemistry and race experience. "Budapest represents more than just another World Championships," Durden explained. "This is where our Olympic team will truly come together and establish the culture that will carry us to Los Angeles. The talent is there - now we need to execute when it matters most."
