Born on May 31, 1991, in Hokitika on New Zealand's South Island, Retallick grew up in a rugby-loving family and quickly showed promise in the sport. His impressive physical attributes, standing 6'8" and weighing over 260 pounds, combined with surprising agility and handling skills, made him a unique prospect from an early age.

Retallick's professional career began with the Chiefs in Super Rugby, where he made his debut in 2012. His immediate impact was undeniable, helping the Chiefs win back-to-back Super Rugby championships in 2012 and 2013.
