Sunisa Lee

Sunisa Phabsomphou Lee was born on March 9, 2003, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, to Hmong-American parents John Lee and Yeev Thoj. As the daughter of refugees from Laos, Sunisa's journey to Olympic glory represents not only personal achievement but also the realization of the American dream for her entire community.

Lee began gymnastics at the age of six at Midwest Gymnastics Center in Little Canada, Minnesota. Her natural talent was evident from the beginning, particularly on uneven bars where her exceptional upper body strength and fluid technique would later make her one of the world's best. Her coach Jess Graba recognized her potential early and helped nurture her development through the demanding junior levels.

As a junior competitor, Lee quickly established herself as one of the most promising talents in American gymnastics. Her breakthrough came at the 2019 U.S. Championships, where she won silver in the all-around and gold on uneven bars, announcing her arrival as a serious contender for the Olympic team.

The path to the Tokyo Olympics was not without challenges for Lee. In 2019, her father John suffered a devastating accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. This family tragedy could have derailed her Olympic dreams, but instead it strengthened her resolve and provided additional motivation to succeed at the highest level.

At the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Lee delivered the performance of a lifetime. With teammate Simone Biles withdrawing from the all-around competition due to mental health concerns, Lee stepped up magnificently to claim the Olympic all-around title. Her victory made her the first Hmong-American Olympic champion and only the fifth American woman to win the prestigious all-around gold.

Lee's Olympic performance included a spectacular routine on uneven bars that showcased her signature skills and incredible consistency under pressure. Her floor exercise routine, performed to emotional music that honored her Hmong heritage, brought tears to spectators' eyes and highlighted the cultural significance of her achievements.

Following her Olympic success, Lee made the decision to attend Auburn University while maintaining her elite status, a challenging balance that few gymnasts attempt. Her presence in collegiate gymnastics has elevated the profile of the NCAA sport and inspired countless young athletes.
