About Hicham El Guerrouj
Hicham El Guerrouj was born on September 14, 1974, in Berkane, a city in northeastern Morocco near the Mediterranean coast. Growing up in a large family with modest means, El Guerrouj discovered running as a teenager and quickly demonstrated extraordinary natural ability. He was inspired by fellow Moroccan Said Aouita, who had dominated middle-distance running in the 1980s, and dreamed of carrying on the proud tradition of Moroccan athletics on the world stage.
El Guerrouj's talent was nurtured by Italian coach Abdelkader Kada, and later by the legendary Moroccan coach Abdelkader Kada and then by the Italian Claudio Berardelli. Under their guidance, he developed the tactical awareness and devastating finishing kick that would make him virtually unbeatable over 1500 meters. His running style was characterized by elegant efficiency, a deceptively smooth stride that masked the extraordinary power and speed he could summon in the final lap of any race.
The young Moroccan burst onto the international scene at the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg, where he won the silver medal in the 1500 meters. This performance announced him as the heir apparent to Noureddine Morceli, the reigning king of middle-distance running. By 1997, El Guerrouj had assumed the throne, winning the first of four consecutive World Championship gold medals in the 1500 meters, a streak of dominance unprecedented in the event's history.
On July 14, 1998, El Guerrouj achieved what many consider the greatest performance in middle-distance running history. Racing in Rome's Golden Gala meeting, he ran 1500 meters in 3 minutes 26.00 seconds, shattering Morceli's world record by more than a second. The time remains the world record and is widely regarded as one of the most untouchable records in athletics. The following year, on July 7, 1999, he set the world record in the mile at 3 minutes 43.13 seconds in Rome, breaking Morceli's record once again. Both records still stand more than two decades later.
Despite his total dominance on the world championship and Diamond League circuits, the Olympic Games proved initially elusive. At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, a young El Guerrouj tripped and fell during the 1500 meter final, finishing last in a race he was favored to win. The devastation was visible and profound. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he was again the overwhelming favorite but was outkicked by Kenya's Noah Ngeny in a stunning upset, finishing with a silver medal. The Olympic jinx weighed heavily on a champion who had won virtually everything else in his sport.
Redemption came gloriously at the 2004 Athens Olympics. In a performance charged with emotion and determination, El Guerrouj won the 1500 meters in commanding fashion, finally claiming the Olympic gold that had eluded him for eight years. He fell to the track in tears after crossing the finish line, overcome by the magnitude of the achievement. Five days later, he added the 5000 meter gold medal, becoming the first athlete since Paavo Nurmi in 1924 to win both the 1500 and 5000 meters at a single Olympic Games.
El Guerrouj's competitive record is staggering in its consistency and excellence. He won four World Championship titles in the 1500 meters, set world records at 1500 meters and the mile that remain unbroken, and claimed double Olympic gold.
