Born on April 20, 1993, in Pembroke Pines, Florida, Gostisbehere represents the growing presence of American players from non-traditional hockey markets who have reached the highest level of professional hockey.

Growing up in South Florida, Gostisbehere developed his hockey skills in a region not typically associated with ice hockey excellence. He played youth hockey with the Florida Panthers AAA program before moving to the prestigious South Kent School in Connecticut, where he could compete against elite-level competition and refine his skills. His performances attracted attention from college scouts, and he committed to Union College in Schenectady, New York.

At Union College, Gostisbehere blossomed into one of college hockey's premier defensemen. In Arizona, Gostisbehere experienced a career resurgence, posting back-to-back seasons with over 50 points and re-establishing himself as one of the league's most productive offensive defensemen.
